About Elevation Facts

Elevation Facts collects US heights and depths (towns, lakes, peaks, the ocean floor) and puts the federal wording right next to each one.

Search for "how high is Denver" or "how deep is Lake Tahoe" and you may get a number that does not say who measured it or what point it refers to. A town's elevation depends on where in town you stand; a lake's depth may be a maximum or an average. We keep that detail visible.

Where the numbers come from

• Lake, ocean, mountain and park figures are quoted from the National Park Service, USGS, NOAA and EPA. Each quote sits under the number, with a link to the page and the date we read it.
• Town elevations are read by us from two public USGS datasets: the place-name coordinates in GNIS and the 3DEP elevation grid. The method page shows exactly how.
• State flowers are listed as the U.S. Botanic Garden gives them.

We are an independent site. No agency, park or garden runs, checks or endorses it. There are no ads, accounts or photos.

Spotted a number that is off?

Email hello@elevationfacts.com with the page and what the source now says. If an agency has changed its wording, we update the quote or remove the figure; we never just move the date. The privacy page says what happens to your message.
